A dynamic session exploring how transformational coaching moves clients from behavior change to identity change--deepening awareness, expanding choice, and creating results that last.

Great coaches don't just help clients do things differently--they help them "be" differently. Understanding the difference between transactional and transformational coaching is what separates technique from mastery.

Transactional coaching works at the level of behavior--identifying problems, setting goals, and designing actions. It's valuable, but limited.

Without addressing the story underneath, the client risks reverting to old patterns the moment pressure returns. Transformational coaching works at the level of being. It invites clients to explore the identities, beliefs, and narratives that drive their choices. The focus shifts from "How do I change this behavior?" to "Who am I being that creates this experience?"

For coaches, learning this distinction is not academic--it's ethical. It's the difference between helping someone achieve a goal and helping them access a new level of awareness that permanently expands what's possible.

When coaches can move fluidly between both--addressing the doing and the being--they honor the full spectrum of human development and fulfill the ICF's core intent: to evoke awareness, not prescribe solutions.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between transactional and transformational coaching approaches and identify when each serves the client best.
  • Recognize the narrative and identity layers influencing behavior--and how to coach the who beneath the what.
  • Apply practical skills to move a coaching conversation from behavior-fixing to awareness-evoking, creating shifts that endure beyond the session.
